What Is the Referral Service?

We are a psychotherapy referral service for the general public in the San Francisco East Bay, and our goal is to find quality help for you. We provide access to quality care and we ensure privacy for everyone who contacts us. Since 1986 we have made many thousands of confidential referrals — to member psychotherapists and, where appropriate, to outside agencies.

How to Use Our Service

Using the service is simple. When you reach out for a confidential, personalized referral, an experienced intake therapist takes time to understand your situation — your goals and desires, your location within the East Bay, payment considerations, appointment availability, and any other issues that matter to you. With that picture in mind, they help you find the therapist who fits you best. You are also welcome to browse this site to learn about the kinds of therapists in our network first.

How We Differ from an Online Directory

East Bay Counseling Choices is a personalized referral service — not just a list of therapists in your geographical area. The difference matters. A directory leaves you to guess which name might be a good fit; we listen first. You can speak with an intake therapist who takes your specific concerns and circumstances into account in order to find the best match for you, rather than leaving the matching entirely to chance.

Concerns We Help People Address

People come to us for help across the full range of emotional and relational life. A sampling includes:

  • Couples, marriage and relationship concerns — communication, conflict, parenting and step-parenting, separation and divorce, intimacy, and cross-cultural relationships
  • Family concerns — sibling relationships, school issues, blended families, and the empty-nest transition
  • Individual concerns — depression and anxiety, stress management, work conflicts, grief and loss, self-esteem, life transitions, and healing from trauma
  • Group support — for those who benefit from working alongside others facing similar challenges

You can explore many of these in depth on our therapy specialties pages. For a broad, reliable overview of mental-health topics, the National Institute of Mental Health is an excellent resource.
